GDG united Build with AI 2024

Yesterday I went to the Build With AI conference jointly hosted by GDG Cloud/Golang/Pangyo.

The session lineup was as shown above.

The admission fee was 5,000 won before the sessions and speakers were finalized, and 10,000 won afterward.

I attended Hands-on Sessions 1 and 2, along with Sessions 4, 5, and 6.

Hands-on Session 1 | Heeju Cho

This session covered “Gemini for Data Scientists and Analysts” from the learning path above.

We went through examples of using Gemini in BigQuery on the Google Cloud console.

It was my first time using a cloud service for working with data, so I got a good feel for what it’s like.

It seems Google is putting a lot of effort into making Gemini easy to use directly from the Google Cloud console.

Hands-on Session 2 | GDG Golang Korea

Project IDX provides a cloud-based IDE accessible from the browser. You need to register an account and get a link to use it.

Since a lot of attendees had signed up for the hands-on session on the day of the event (myself included), we started by installing Go locally instead of using Project IDX. (Project IDX seems to support a lot of environments — I’ll try it out sometime.)

The AC was blasting cold air, so I slipped over to Session 4 partway through, but Go seems to have solid support for package management and CLI tooling, and I could feel the positive energy from the Golang Korea team.

Sessions 4, 5, 6 | Jeongmin Kwon, Jinhyung Park, Youngbin Lee

Session 4 covered data analysis using MMM (Marketing Mix Modeling).

Sessions 5 and 6 were about tuning generative AI models.

These were all areas I have no direct experience in, so rather than fully understanding the material, I got an indirect sense of what people in these fields/roles actually do and how they approach solving problems.

Amazing support..!

The venue was spacious, and they provided a t-shirt, swag, a boxed lunch, coffee/snacks, and more..!

Just the basic amenities alone were worth more than the admission fee.

Thank you, GDG Cloud/Golang/Pangyo!

Thank you, GDG Cloud/Golang/Pangyo!

There was also a prize raffle at the closing. They had Gemini randomly pick the winners. Lol.

I’d never won a raffle at an event before, but this time I got lucky and won the best prize — a bag. I’ll be sure to put it to good use.

Thoughts

Since this was hosted by GDG, I got to experience the Google Cloud Platform (GCP) and Google’s AI ecosystem (Gemma). I’ve mostly used AWS when it comes to cloud services, but GCP looks pretty convenient too.

I got to hear about topics I’d never encountered before, like MMM, FuseLLM, OpenXLA, and Griffin.

I could really tell how much thought went into attendee experience at this event. Thanks so much to the GDG Cloud/Golang/Pangyo organizing team for all their hard work!
